SEO and GEO are not two products. They are two win conditions on top of the same site.
SEO gets a page into a ranked list of links on Google or Bing. The buyer scans the list and clicks.
GEO gets a passage, a fact, or the business named inside an AI answer — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews / AI Mode. The buyer often reads the answer and never clicks.
The term GEO comes from a 2023 paper (Aggarwal, Murahari, and others). In their tests, adding citations, quotations, and statistics lifted visibility in generative answers by up to about 40% — on pages the engine already had. That is a content-format result, not a ranking guarantee.
The actual difference
A Google results page is a list. You win a slot.
An AI answer is a paragraph. You win a citation, a paraphrase, or a recommendation — or you are invisible even if you rank #1 in classic search.
A Port Charlotte HVAC example:
- SEO win: ac-heroes.com/ac-repair/ sits in the top 3 for “AC repair Sarasota.”
- GEO win: someone asks ChatGPT “who does same-day AC repair in Sarasota?” and the model names AC Heroes, cites the page, or lifts the 40–60 word answer off the homepage.
Same company. Different job. A page can do one and fail the other if the first screen is fluffy and the entity (name, city, license, services) is fuzzy.
Side by side
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Google / Bing results, Map Pack | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews |
| Goal | Rank a URL | Be cited or recommended in the answer |
| Unit of work | The page | The passage + the entity |
| Buyer behavior | Scan links, click | Read the answer (often zero-click) |
| Primary fuel | Keywords, links, technical health, E-E-A-T | Extractable answers, consistent entity, off-site mentions, sourced facts |
| Success metric | Rankings, organic sessions, CTR | Citations, brand mentions, share of AI voice |
| Query shape | Short keywords: plumber north port | Full prompts: who handles emergency plumbing in North Port tonight? |
Google has said its AI features still rest on ordinary Search quality systems: the page has to be indexed and snippet-eligible. GEO does not replace that floor.
What they share
If the site cannot be crawled, the entity is inconsistent, or the content is thin, both fail.
Shared floor:
- Indexable, fast, mobile site
- Clear service pages (repair vs install, not one blob)
- Matching Name / Address / Phone on the site and Google Business Profile
- Real reviews, real citations
- Helpful, specific content — not keyword stuffing
GEO sits on that. It does not skip it.
What changes in the writing
SEO still cares that the page is about the right topic and earns links.
GEO cares whether a model can lift a clean sentence without guessing.
That is why the work looks different on the page:
- First screen states who / what / where in plain English
“AC Heroes is a veteran-owned HVAC company in Sarasota…” not “Looking for reliable cooling solutions?” - Question-style headings that match how people prompt AI
- Short, self-contained answers before the long explanation
- Numbers, licenses, service areas, named owner — things a model can check elsewhere
- FAQ and schema so the structure is obvious
- Fresh dates when the page actually changed
Keyword density is a weak GEO lever. Unlinked brand mentions, a clean entity, and extractable claims carry more weight in AI answers than they do in classic ranking.
How you measure each
SEO: position for AC repair Sarasota, Map Pack presence, clicks, calls from organic.
GEO: prompt the tools. “Best AC repair in Sarasota,” “who does same-day AC in Bradenton,” “HVAC company near Lakewood Ranch.” Did they name you, cite you, or recommend a competitor? Track that over time. Traffic from ChatGPT is a bonus; the citation is the product.
GEO vs AEO vs “AI SEO”
You will see three labels for overlapping work:
- SEO — rank in the list
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — win the direct-answer slot (featured snippet, voice, sometimes the Overview)
- GEO — be the source inside a generated answer
For a local shop, treat AEO and GEO as the same practical job: write answers a machine can quote. Do not buy three retainers.
What GEO is not
- Not a listing you can purchase in ChatGPT
- Not a replacement for Maps or Google Business Profile
- Not “add ChatGPT to the footer”
- Not guaranteed citations because you used the word GEO
If the site is a brochure and the profile does not match the site, GEO copy will not save it. That is the chassis problem Lumina is built to fix; SEO and GEO then run on the same pages.
Your public explainer is here: uswebcentral.com/what-is-generative-engine-optimization-geo/. The category description we wrote for AI Visibility is the GEO shelf; Local SEO is the Maps / GBP / citations shelf. Most posts should sit in both when the piece is “show up in Google and in ChatGPT.”
